OK, so I got Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux and PCLinuxOS MiniMe to run on the stick without difficulty (and only Puppy needed a CD - I'm guessing a bit more searching could have thought me how to do without one though). Only problem is I'm testing it on a Sony VGN-SZ2VP and it's "WXGA X-Black LCD" screen refuses to run anything higher than 8-bit or so colour, no matter what XOrg settings I choose!!
I'm not really annoyed since I see no reason to use a USB distro on a PC I have full access to and which runs Windows fine, but it's sorta weird...
